Potholes
In any number of television shows and movies, potholes have been noted as an annoyance and turned into a simple joke. To the victim of a motorcycle accident caused by a pothole, however, there is likely very little humor involved. Unfortunately, potholes are not uncommon in a climate like that found in Iowa, because the weather conditions can absolutely destroy a roadway’s integrity.
This is especially true when you get to the outskirts of cities and the rural byways that cross the state, where there is little public pressure (or funding) to address the problems immediately. Essentially, a pothole can be thought of as a sudden drop in the level of the road surface that only extends for perhaps a few feet at a maximum.
Dangers of Potholes
They wreak havoc on car suspensions, struts, and tires. Generally, though, they are at worst responsible for repairable damage to an automobile. With a motorcycle, the stakes are substantially raised. As a result of the balancing of a bike on two wheels, any disruption of momentum or sudden shift in trajectory can create dangerous instability because it compromises the motorcycle’s ability to maintain road contact with both tires.
Beyond that, the suspension of most road-purpose (as opposed to off-road) bikes is not capable of absorbing too great a blow, and the impact might crash the bike or throw the rider. And depending upon the depth of the pothole, the sudden force may burst the tire, placing the motorcyclist in extraordinary danger.
