Does it matter how much insurance I have on my bike?
The most important person you can insure, especially when riding a motorcycle, is YOU. Too often, negligent drivers who injure motorcyclists don’t have enough insurance to cover the damages they cause. Worse yet, there is an alarming number of drivers with no insurance at all. Fortunately, you can protect yourself by purchasing plenty of uninsured (UM) and underinsured (UIM) motorist coverage.
I’m no advocate of the insurance industry, and am not looking to help them pad their pockets. It is a fact in my motorcycle injury law practice, however, that there is usually not enough insurance to cover the injuries caused to bikers by drivers of autos and trucks. I suggest that you look at your insurance policy to make sure you have UM/UIM coverage. Every circumstance is different, but it’s my opinion that every biker should carry at least $200,000 in UM/UIM. That may sound like a lot, but experience has shown me that it’s the minimum a biker should carry.
What you risk by not carrying sufficient UM/UIM limits is not being reimbursed for your damages if you are struck or go down at the hands of another motorist. Medical bills alone are often close to $100,000 in serious crashes. Add the loss of income for being out of work for several months while healing from injuries, and you can see why insurance is often an issue.
The person that injures you probably won’t have enough insurance to cover your losses. Protect yourself and your family by carrying plenty of UM/UIM insurance.
