Women and Motorcycle Equipment

Today, more women are riding motorcycles than ever before. In fact, women now own more than twelve percent of all motorcycles in the United States, compared to less than ten percent in 2003, and around six percent in 1990. In addition, women make up around one quarter of the 25 million total motorcycle riders nationwide.

Despite the prevalence of female bikers, women sometimes still face problems when purchasing a bike or equipment because of size issues. Motorcycles and their equipment have been traditionally designed to incorporate a range of average men's frame sizes, and women are typically smaller than men. Therefore, sometimes women riders struggle to find gear that works for their size.

Many bike manufacturers have begun to address the issue by designing bikes that have lower seat heights and overall weights, which are popular among female buyers. Low seat height is especially important so that women can easily flat-foot when stopping to help with control and parking.

Women are enrolling in motorcycle safety courses in greater numbers than any other riding group. 53 percent of new women riders enroll in such courses. Despite the focus of individual female riders on safety, the lack of readily available safety gear that fits properly is an ongoing issue. Some women cite instances when they had to purchase gear designed for men to find a helmet that fit. So, even though riding gear that looks good and fits well for women has been on the rise, it is still a problem that is unresolved.
