Safety Clothing Basics

Bikers should realize that they are at a distinct disadvantage in terms of safety in the event of a crash, regardless of who causes the accident. They are much more exposed to the perils of the road and the other vehicles and should therefore take significant steps to provide themselves with some protection from the elements.

One of the best things any biker can do is not wear plain clothes while out on the motorcycle. Plain clothes are not designed to offer protection from abrasion at the speeds at which a biker may hit the ground in a fall or an accident. As such, wearing a leather biker jacket not only looks cool but also provides far more protection than ordinary clothes.

When choosing safety clothing for a bike ride, it is important to consider clothing that has extra padding or plating around the joints that are likely to lead in a fall. The shoulders, knees, elbows, and any other place should all have reinforced joints and even plates of some material. This will maximize the protection from hard surfaces.

In considering the material of the outfit, it is crucial to balance safety with comfort. Obviously, one does not want to be too hot in one’s gear. In addition, fit is equally as crucial. If the safety clothing is not comfortable due to heat or fit, it is most likely not going to be worn, defeating the purpose of ever buying it in the first place.

Overall, clothing should be tested before it is mass marketed and should fit properly. Beyond that, it is the biker’s responsibility to wear it in order for injuries to be prevented.
