Rust and Motorcycles

Though newer motorcycles are primarily made from aluminum, there are several parts that still are made of steel and are in danger of rusting. Not only does rust have an effect on the appearance of steel, but it also significantly weakens the metal if not removed in a timely manner. Occasionally, if more than one part of a motorcycle rusts, the affected parts can become stuck together. It is crucial to observe the onset of rust and know how to remove it correctly.

Several factors can lead to rust. While they are not always avoidable, understanding what leads to the oxidation of metal can help you in finding and removing the problem before it leads to further complications. These causes include but are not limited to:

  • Nicks, scratches, and dents that can expose the metal
  • Season change
  • Coastal climate
  • Neglect or inactivity

Removal of rust from these parts is critical for the upkeep of a motorcycle, but should be done with extreme care. To reach some locations on a motorcycle, you may need to disassemble or remove certain parts. When this is done, make sure to document the correct assembly and order in which the pieces were removed. Incorrect rebuilding after a cleaning can be extremely dangerous.
