Road Rash

One injury that is quite prominently linked to the world of motorcycle riding is Road rash. Although there is a popular video game series that goes by the same name, it would be ill-advised to dismiss Road rash as an insignificant injury. Riders who have fallen on their bikes while in motion or who have been thrown from an impact are likely familiar with the intense pain that accompanies this common injury.

Road rash is the informal name for the condition that develops when friction between a motorcyclist’s body and the surface of the roadway pulls the outer layers of the skin off of the deeper tissues. It is primarily an abrasion injury, but the high speed and rough surface combine to create a substantial likelihood that a fallen motorcyclist will also experience deep lacerations. Both the abrasions and lacerations are prone to infection, and that is one of the primary reasons that you should seek medical attention if you develop Road rash.

You may think that the wounds are fairly minor, but cuts that you cannot see and infections that you may be unable to stave off can have dramatic adverse effects on your health. The risk is enhanced because the trauma that caused the injury in the first place involved prolonged contact between the newly created wound and the dirt and germ-riddled street. Infections can quickly devastate your health and if you do not address them immediately, there can be serious consequences.
