Rider Fatigue
Although riding motorcycles is an enjoyable pastime for many, it is also more work than some people may realize. It takes an immense amount of energy to maintain awareness while on the road – even more than while driving a car. It can also be much more physically draining than driving a car, and riders can quickly become fatigued. Inclement weather and high temperatures can also help drain a biker’s energy.
Symptoms of Fatigue
Fatigue is especially a danger on long rides, and the best riders know how to recognize it. Signs include:
- Inability to concentrate
- Sleepiness
- Delayed reaction times
- Lack of focus or awareness
If you experience any of these issues while riding, it is best to consider them a warning sign of impending fatigue and do something to address them as soon as possible.
How to Handle Fatigue
Different riders have their preferred methods of handling road weariness, and some common tips include:
- Stopping to stretch, walk, or engage in mild exercise
- Prepare by getting plenty of sleep
- Eat frequent, light meals, rather than those that are heavy and spaced out
- Stay hydrated
- Use good ear plugs – road noise can contribute to fatigue
Some riders use caffeine or other stimulants, but these only work for a short while and may lead to an even harder crash. If you feel like you need caffeine, you may want to consider stopping and resting before you go on.
