Protective Clothing for Motorcycle Riders

In the event of a motorcycle accident, wearing the right protective clothing can do a lot to prevent injuries from occurring. While the right protective clothing cannot eliminate your chances of getting injured in a motorcycle accident, it is an important aspect of motorcycle safety, and one that should not be overlooked.

Below is a list of some important clothing items that can help protect you when on a motorcycle:

Helmet

Helmets are perhaps the most important piece of protective equipment a motorcyclist has. In the event of an accident, helmets dramatically reduce the severity of head / brain injuries. When shopping for a motorcycle helmet, you will want to choose one that fits snugly and has the DOT label on it. The DOT label lets you know that the helmet conforms to the federal standard for motorcycle helmets.

Eye Protection

Since most motorcycles do not have a windshield or other protective screen, motorcyclists will want to invest in some protective eye wear to keep bugs and debris from getting into their eyes and hindering their vision.

Jackets and Pants

In the event of an accident, you will want to make sure that your arms and legs are completely covered to reduce abrasions. You will want to make sure the material is thick and durable and covers your legs and arms entirely.

Footwear

You will want to make sure your feet and ankles are completely covered by your footwear. Leather boots are ideal, but strong athletic shoes are a fine alternative. You should never ride in sandals or sneakers, as they provide little to no protection.
