Prepare for Emergencies

Depending on the size of your bike, it may not be possible for you to carry a large roadside emergency kit. However, as most experienced motorcycle operators know, preparation is one of the main keys to having safe, enjoyable rides. Depending on the type of travel you do and your bike, consider putting together any of the following materials that apply to you. If you are in an accident or experience another emergency, these could do anything from providing some physical comfort to saving you a lot of time and money to saving your life.

Tools and Key Parts

Many motorcycles come equipped with tool kits. Make sure that yours includes the wrenches needed for your vehicle, pliers, and wire cutters. You may also want to carry a small multi-purpose tool such as a Swiss Army knife. Carry as many spare parts as is feasible. Extra lights, spark plugs, and oil can make all the difference, especially if you are traveling in rural areas.

First Aid

All riders should carry some type of first aid. It is easy to end up with minor scrapes or burns while riding, and these will be much less of a problem if they’re treated immediately. Due to the limited amount of space on most bikes, it’s usually best to by a compact pre-packaged kit. Try to find the one that gives you the most supplies for space provided.

Other Safety Items

Other items that can be crucial in emergency situations and that you should carry if at all possible include:

  • Reflective gear (even small tape strips that can be affixed to your clothing)
  • Flashlight
  • Duct tape
  • Tire repair kit

Preparing for emergencies, both large and small, will help make rides smoother.
