Night Riding Safety Tips

While riding a motorcycle is thrilling and fun, it can also be extremely dangerous. According to the US Department of Transportation, motorcycle accidents are more likely to occur while riding at night. Additionally, 60% of all motorcycle fatalities occur after dark. So, when taking your hog out for a spin, it’s important to implement all possible safety precautions, especially when riding at night.

In order to prevent night-time accidents, here are some helpful safety tips to increase your presence while riding after dark:

  • Make sure that your headlight is angled as high as your state allows. This ensures that your light shines at the appropriate height for other motorists to see you.
  • Clean your headlight frequently, as more than 50% of your beam can be diluted by dust and dirt.
  • Always use your high-beams unless you are: 1) in a well developed area, 2) following another vehicle, 3) approaching an oncoming vehicle, or 4) passing another vehicle.
  • Check before every ride to make sure that all lights on motorbike are working (front, side, back, and brake).
  • Use reflective gear and graphics. Reflective strips can be purchased at most motorcycle stores and placed on jackets and helmets. Additionally, reflective graphics are available to enhance your bike’s style and safety.
