Motorcycle Licensing
There are unique regulations in place to monitor motorcycle use, so it is unsurprising that there are motorcycle licenses that must be acquired and kept within their expiration dates as well. Each state has their own set of laws for motorcyclists and should be examined closely. In Iowa, you must pass a written exam and on-cycle performance test to receive your license.
Choosing to ride without a license can have extremely costly consequences. The lack of proper training poses a threat to the safety of other motorists, and it also exposes the rider to various penalties for such irresponsible behavior. Some of these punishments could include:
- Fines
- Incarceration
- Required attendance at a motorcycle safety course
- Impound of the vehicle
In Iowa you do not need a separate motorcycle license if you have a vehicle license. Once you have passed the required tests, your license will be updated to include motorcycle operation as well. If you do not have a vehicle license, an individual motorcycle license will be issued to you. It is important to be aware of all legal obligations you have as a motorcyclist so that you do not put yourself needlessly at risk for accidents or legal troubles.

If you have taken all the appropriate steps to become a qualified motorcyclist, then you should be able to reasonably expect that other motorists will recognize your right to the roadway. Unfortunately, many motorcycle accidents are caused when another driver collides with a bike or causes a motorcycle to crash.
