More Women “Get Off the Back” and Buy Their Own Bikes
More women are riding motorcycles now than ever before, and more and more women have decided to take
a step forward and “get off the back” of someone else’s motorcycle and buy their own bikes. According
to statistics from the Motorcycle Industry Council Owner Survey of 2008, 12.3 percent of motorcycle
owners in the United States are women.
Of the 25 million Americans who rode a motorcycle last year, women made up 5.7 million. The number one
reason that women are becoming bike owners is, according to the survey, pure pleasure. Different women
cite the sense of freedom and confidence they feel when riding, the new friendships they make, and the
newfound sense of adventure that motorcycles allow as reasons for buying.
May different clubs and organizations have been gaining popularity over the past few years. Women on
Wheels (WOW) is a women’s motorcycle organization with the purpose of uniting women cyclists and encouraging
other women to get interested in motorcycles, and to encourage the motorcycle industry to recognize
women as serious enthusiasts and to develop products to meet women’s needs.
WOW was founded in 1982 by a single woman in California and has now grown to 3000 members nationwide.
Iowa alone has three chapters of the organization. Other women’s biking organizations have local chapters
and clubs as well, holding events such as Girls’ Night Out and women’s rallies to attract women to the
sport.
