Iowa Motorcycle Laws

Motorcycle laws vary from state to state. If you are an Iowa motorcycle rider, it is important to be familiar with Iowa's motorcycle laws and your rights on the road. Remember that even though official motorcycle laws may not specifically require certain safety gear, you should still exercise proper safety precautions and use appropriate safety equipment when riding.

Under Iowa's state motorcycle laws:

  • State-funded rider education is required for any rider under the age of 18.
  • The use of a headlight during the daytime is required.
  • A passenger seat and passenger footrest is required if carrying a passenger. There exist no restrictions on a passenger's age.
  • Lane splitting is not permitted.
  • Right and Left mirrors are required.
  • Compulsory Liability insurance is required.
  • Motorcycles are allowed to operate two abreast in the same lane, though no more than two.
  • A safety helmet is not required.
  • Eye protection is not required.
  • Helmet speakers are allowed as are radar detectors.
  • Periodic safety inspections are not required.
  • Turn signals are not required.
  • There exist no requirements on mufflers or maximum sound levels.
  • There are no restrictions on handlebar height.

All riders should be aware of laws in each state they visit and prepare accordingly. On long trips through multiple states, riders should comply with the laws of each respective state.
