Timeline of Motorcycle Development

  • 1867: The first steam-powered motorcycle is invented by American inventor Sylvester Howard Roper. It was a two-cylinder engine powered by coal. For some this cannot be considered the first motorcycle since it was a steam powered engine and not a gas-engines vehicle.
  • 1885: The first gas-powered motorcycle is invented by German inventor Gottlieb Daimler. It was an engine attached to a wooden bike.
  • 1903: William Harley and the brothers Arthur and Walter Davidson begin the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. Whereas most of the past motorcycle inventors went on to develop cars, the Harley-Davidson crew stuck solely to motorcycles for the entirety of their ventures. They were the first to develop a motorcycle for more than just races. They had their sights set on developing a vehicle for transportation as well as speed. To this day, over a hundred years later, Harley-Davidson continues to be a name synonymous with motorcycles.
