Four Fatality Factors

Riding a motorcycle is dangerous enough on its own. So dangerous, in fact, that needlessly introducing any additional hazards is foolish. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has identified four factors that are the most common contributors to fatal motorcycle accidents in which the motorcyclist was at least partially at fault. Since it is an adjoining state, the weather conditions are very similar to those in Iowa, so the observations are worth noting, particularly at the onset of the summer riding season. By staying aware of these dangers, you can more safely operate your bike and decrease the likelihood that you will become involved in a crash.

Risks and Avoidance

  • Rider inexperience: While a period of inexperience is inevitable, you can reduce the skill gap considerably by completing a proper motorcycle training program. These courses are designed to introduce riders to techniques that can help them respond to specific roadway conditions that require advanced skills or actions.
  • Inattention: At times, riding a motorcycle can demand all of the physical strength and mental energy that you have, but it is vital to remain aware of your surroundings and other vehicles in the traffic flow at all times.
  • Speed: It can be tempting to test the limits of your bike and your skill as a rider, but it is a dangerous gamble. Observing the posted speed limits and lowering your speed as necessitated by road conditions and the course that the road takes may save your life.
  • Alcohol: The consumption of alcohol and the operation of any vehicle simply do not mix. Don’t drink and ride.
