Federal Funds to Encourage Fuel Efficiency
In an effort to encourage the purchase of more fuel-efficient vehicles, the United States Congress has recently passed legislation to authorize the distribution of vouchers to promote the trade-in of gas guzzling machines.
Informally known as the “Cash for Clunkers” program, the measure represents a step forward in the fight against wasteful consumption of petroleum fuels – a fight that motorcyclists have been ahead of the curve on for a long time. It may be beneficial to consider taking advantage of this opportunity if your car gets poor mileage and you think it might be time to make a change.

Cash for Clunkers
The legislation that has been approved has yet to be signed into law, so there may be some changes, but indications are that the administration has no standing objections. You are eligible to obtain a cash voucher in the amount of $3,500 toward the purchase of a new car or truck if your current vehicle gets less than 18 MPG and your new automobile obtains 22 MPG or better. The amount is raised to $4,500 if you make a 10 MPG improvement. Some things to note:
- The vehicle that you are trading in must have been made in the past 25 years
- Motorcycles are not eligible for the program
- The dealer will determine which voucher you may receive
- Voucher value cannot be combined with trade-in value
