Dangers of Motor Scooters
Motor scooters have experienced a surge of popularity in the US in recent years. These small motorized vehicles are like motorcycles, but typically have a step-through frame. They can be convenient for city driving and typically get good gas mileage. There are many reasons to consider owning a scooter, but drivers of these vehicles sometimes forget or are unaware of the risks associated with them.
Smaller, Slower, but Still Dangerous
Sometimes scooter riders are lulled into a false sense of security as they drive. Typically, scooters cannot go as fast as other motorcycles. Often these vehicles are used to navigate busy city traffic, which can feel less dangerous than highway travel. However, some of the dangers of scooters include:
- Their size – In some ways, it can make a driver feel safer to handle a small bike. However, the small size of scooters means that they are even harder for car and truck drivers to see.
- Their speed – Scooters are intended for slower driving, but because of their size drivers sometimes make the mistake of weaving through traffic and not having the necessary engine power to accelerate if they move in front of a faster-moving vehicle.
- Their drivers – Scooter drivers tend to be younger than car or other motorcycle drivers. They may have less experience than other drivers, and less sure of how to handle critical split-second decisions.
Scooters are safer than bigger or faster bikes in some ways, but as with all motorcycles, one of the biggest dangers is drivers who feel too comfortable in their actions and lose awareness of their surroundings.
