Changing a Motorcycle Headlight
Replacing a dimming headlight is essential for safe motorcycle maintenance and upkeep. A few years ago, most motorcycle headlights could simply be replaced by opening the bucket and switching the dimming or burned out light with a standard light. Nowadays, however, the wide variety of headlights available requires a motorcycle rider to be prepared in advance for a dimming light.
How to be prepared
To make sure that you are safe on the road and are never left without the illumination you need, be sure to follow the following tips:
- Check your owners’ manual for the type of headlight and number of lights your bike requires, and have this information at your disposal
- Practice replacing your headlight so that you are able to do so if you suddenly need a replacement light
- Some motorcycles require conversion adapters with certain bulbs; have these on hand
- Keep a few spares handy
- Make sure you have an appropriate screwdriver handy
- Make sure your fog lights work well with your low beams
Road conditions are often unfavorable for motorcycle riders. Your ability to monitor the roadways and take appropriate action plays a large part in determining your safety on the road. Having no working headlights can be a serious disadvantage, but you can take comfort in the fact that you will likely be forewarned of a burning out light as it will start dimming before it completely goes out.
