Cell Phones and Motorcycles

Cell phones have been a distracting epidemic among drivers of cars. Due to the lack of protection from wind and road noises, motorcycles were slower to take off in the trend of distracted drivers. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how one looks at it, there are now a number of options for motorcycles riders to engage in the habit of driving and talking on the phone at the same time.

One of the biggest leaps forward for motorcycle telecommunications was the advent of Bluetooth. Without this technology and the phones to go with it, motorcycle riders may have been able to attach their helmets to their cell phones via a special type of headset but there was still a wire involved. Now, helmets are even equipped with Bluetooth capabilities from the beginning, allowing the driver to connect to his or her phone without the need of a cable or cord.

Other options that exist for motorcyclists are tied to the possibility of radios and microphones in helmets. For individuals who frequently have passengers, there were helmets available that allowed the two riders to communicate without nearly as much shouting. This too was adapted to the requirements of cell phones.

While there are not as many studies available for motorcycles and cell phones, it can be guessed that these adaptations in communications do not necessarily help concentration. One benefit is that the biker still has both hands on the handlebars so that distraction has been eliminated. But still, like all actions, if one is focusing any attention on a conversation, not everything is being devoted to the road.
