Avoid Accidents with Large Trucks

Any motorcycle accident involving another vehicle poses a greater threat to the biker than to the occupants of the other car or truck. An accident involving a semi-truck would most likely be fatal. Motorcyclists can stay safe and avoid these accidents by understanding the inherent dangers of large trucks.

The Dangers of 18-Wheelers

Large trucks have certain characteristics that make them more dangerous than other vehicles out on the road. Two of the most significant safety hazards include:

  • Extensive blind spots. Large trucks have blind spots directly behind and in front of the vehicle, below the passenger-side door, and on the rear-sides of the long cab. Avoid riding in these spots, and be sure that you can always see the truck's mirrors.
  • Extended braking times. Because of the size, weight, and weight distribution of large trucks, they take a long time to slow down or come to a complete stop. Cutting too closely to the front of a large truck is always a dangerous decision because if you need to hit your brakes, the truck may not be able to slow down in time to avoid a collision.

Although some trucking accidents are the fault of the truck driver or truck manufacturer, many other accidents are caused by the behaviors of others out on the road. Do your part to keep the roadways safe by driving cautiously in the vicinity of large trucks.
