June 15: Annual International Ride to Work Day

Although Americans own over 8 million motorcycles and scooters, most of these vehicles are kept in the garage until the weekend or a vacation rolls around. The number of Americans who use their motorcycles for regular transportation only totals around 200,000. This may already seem unfortunate to avid bikers, but looks even more so when one considers the many benefits of biking.

In 1991, the first International Ride to Work Day was held to demonstrate the ease and enjoyment of commuting on a motorcycle to doubtful automobile drivers. The 2009 celebration is scheduled for Monday, June 15th. Anyone who owns a motorcycle, moped, or scooter is encouraged to observe this occasion in a very simple way: all you have to do is ride your two-wheeled vehicle to work and back.

Why Bike to Work?

If it is not already part of your daily routine, you may be wondering about the benefits of biking as a primary mode of transportation. If so, you may want to consider some of these advantages that nearly every two-wheeled vehicle has over a car:

  • Less gasoline consumption, which will likely result in much lower fuel costs
  • Increased maneuverability, giving you more options on the road (and in avoiding crashes)
  • Much easier to park
  • Reduced air pollution, road damage, and traffic
  • More fun than driving a car – and may help you arrive at work feeling energized

In addition to all of these reasons, a large number of people biking to work can increase awareness of motorcycle presence on the road. Too many accidents occur every year because automobile drivers are not accustomed to bikers and fail to give them the right of way.
