A Study of Iowa Motorcycle Helmet Use

As a motorcyclist, you are no doubt aware that Iowa remains one of only three states that do not require riders to wear a motorcycle helmet. This leaves the decision in the hands of individual riders, granting them the ability to act as they see fit without the threat of any legal penalties. Obviously, motorcycle helmet usage has been closely linked to significant reduction of the fatality rate in the event of a motorcycle accident, so it is wise to at least consider wearing one, even though the law does not mandate it.

A study conducted by Iowa State University examined the factors that influence the decision of Iowa motorcyclists to don helmets, despite the lack of a legal requirement. Study Findings

From 2000-2006 (excluding 2003) during the months from April to August, an observer watched traffic at a location prescribed by the Office of Transportation Inventory. These observations were conducted on every day of the week and spanned all daylight hours (roughly 7 AM to 6 PM). Overall:

  • 90,000 motorcycles were seen during the course of the investigation
  • A total of 3,317 daily survey records were collected
  • 12 % of those motorcycles had passengers
  • 39 % of passengers wore helmets on an average daily basis
  • 36 % of operators wore helmets

The study determined that:

  • Riders and passengers are both more likely to wear helmets on rainy days than on cloudy days
  • Both are also more likely to wear helmets on cloudy days than on sunny days
  • Riders are more likely to wear helmets if traveling with a passenger
  • Helmets are less commonly used on city roads than on freeways and highways
